The Republican senator praised the work done since the Donald Trump administration to attack Mexican cartels such as the Sinaloa cartels or the Jalisco Nueva Generación.
After yesterday the Mexican Chamber of Deputies approved the National Security Law that regulates the activities of foreign agents in Mexico, Republican Senator Ted Cruz today called on US diplomats to use the “influence” of their country and make it clear to the Mexican government that “attacking” the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) is unacceptable.
“Diplomats and officials of the United States should use their voice and the influence of the United States to make clear to the Mexican government that attacking or undermining the DEA is unacceptable, ” he elaborated on the matter in a letter addressed to the Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and the Attorney General of the United States, William Barr.
The senator of Cuban origin reproached that after his government agreed to hand over General Salvador Cienfuegos to Mexico with the promise of being tried in the country, “they have not done so” and instead, from his point of view, they have undermined the anti-narcotics agency.
“They have moved, in recent days, to further undermine the capabilities of the DEA in Mexico, including forcing our agents to disclose highly sensitive information and denying them legal immunity to carry out their duties, ” the senator from Texas reproached.
For Cruz, the non-compliance of the Mexican government in the Cienfuegos case is aggravated not only by the enactment of the National Security Law, which in theory prevents a similar situation from being repeated where Mexico does not know that the United States is investigating his territory to a high-level official for drug trafficking but it is also aggravated by the request that Genaro García Luna also be returned.
“He requested the additional transfer of Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, who is currently on trial in the Eastern District of New York on charges related to bribery and cocaine trafficking for the Sinaloa cartel,” the Republican highlighted.
Cruz praised the work done since the administration of Donald Trump to attack Mexican cartels such as that of Sinaloa or Jalisco Nueva Generación and at the same time regretted that, unfortunately, “there are increasingly influential voices in the Mexican government that disagree with that mission ”.
Therefore, he urged them to firmly reject and respond to these requests and efforts of the López Obrador administration, “given the conduct of the Mexican government regarding the Cienfuegos case, the transfer of García Luna should not be a start.”
And regarding the case of the National Security Law and the repercussions it has for agencies such as the DEA, it is an action that “casts doubt on the strength of the Mexico-United States relationship, which must be reevaluated.”
He went further in his reflection and argued that “ the intransigence of the Mexican government increasingly endangers the national security of the United States, as well as the safety and health of Americans, just as it does with Mexico and Mexican citizens. ”.
Cruz’s letter ends by making another exhortation to the attorney general and the secretary of state so that in the next few days they obtain “guarantees from the Mexican government that their promises regarding the extradition of Cienfuegos will be fulfilled and, more generally, that they will attack the critical work against drugs carried out by US and Mexican agents who fight against drug cartels in Mexico.
