ZIHUATANEJO, Gro., September 5, 2023.- Several archaeological remains are preserved in the bay of Zihuatanejo, some of which are found by divers and fishermen while carrying out their activities under the sea.
The fishing leader, Gregorio Bustos Ayvar recalled that in February 2020 he found a clay pot 10 meters deep on La Ropa beach, in front of the La Casa que Canta restaurant. The object was delivered to the Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande (Macogra) a few months later for its exhibition.
While more than 50 years ago the legendary diver, Oliverio Maciel, took out several similar vessels, two steel cannons and an anchor more than three meters long.
The findings belong to boats that were sunk in the bay of Zihuatanejo during the Colonial era, leaving traces of that part of history.
Bustos Ayvar commented that with the passage of time more objects of this type will emerge, since the sea itself moves the sand and makes it visible, as happened with the vessel that he found more than three years ago.
He added that Zihuatanejo was an important navigational site hundreds of years ago, so there are surely objects still under the sea.
