The seismic alert is useless! Hurricane ‘Otis’ deactivates sensors in Guerrero, Oaxaca and Michoacán

The impact of Hurricane ‘Otis’ caused the communication of 27 sensors of the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX) to be lost, reported the Seismic Instrumentation and Registration Center.

“In the event that a strong earthquake occurs, close to the affected sensors, a seismic alert notice cannot be issued,” the statement reads.

This situation affected the Pacific Ocean region of the coasts of Michoacán, Guerrero and Oaxaca.

“Although the CIRES engineering brigades are ready to carry out recovery work at the SASMEX communications sites, there is knowledge of damage to some main roads in the region by land, so it is estimated that it will take longer than normal to arrive to address the damage,” they indicated in the statement.

Hurricane ‘Otis’ renders SkyAlert seismic sensors useless

In addition to this, the meteorological phenomenon caused the disconnection of the SkyAlert seismic sensors in Guerrero.

“We regret to inform you that due to the destructive effects of Hurricane ‘Otis’ in Guerrero, much of our seismic sensor network, known as REDSkyAlert, is offline in the region. This situation means that, in the event of an earthquake in these areas, we will not be able to alert the population,” reads a statement.

SkyAlert said they cannot determine when seismic sensor service will be restored in Guerrero.
