Sailfest, the annual two-week event in Zihuatanejo on Mexico’s west coast, is set to return in February 2025. This event brings together cruisers to raise funds for local children’s education. The 2025 plans are now on the calendar, and cruisers are encouraged to participate!
The mission of Sailfest is to “create a more promising future for the least advantaged children of Zihuatanejo by providing safe, healthy, and sustainable schools that promote a positive learning environment.” Activities supporting this mission include daily sailing cruises, a sail parade, the Rally Round the Rock race, and various onshore events such as auctions, concerts, parades (both on and off the water), a champagne breakfast, and even a chili cook-off. These events are designed to be fun while encouraging generous donations to support the children.
This year’s Sailfest was a tremendous success, with every event surpassing the previous year’s attendance and revenue. Over 200 volunteers participated, with even more eager to join next year. Notably, one-third of the 15 organizing committees are now chaired by Mexican volunteers, helping Sailfest net just over 2 million pesos.
One of the highlights of Sailfest is visiting the schools that benefit from the funds raised. This year, cruisers visited Colegio de Bachilleres, a school built with Sailfest/Por Los Niños funds and donations. Por Los Niños is the foundation created by Sailfest to manage the raised funds.
Over the past 20+ years, Sailfest has funded numerous projects, including:
– New construction and refurbishments: 175 projects, including new and repaired classrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, playgrounds, and multi-purpose covered outdoor spaces across 46 schools.
– Scholarships and sponsorships: Helping smart, motivated students achieve their educational dreams, often hindered by poverty.
– Nutrition: The “Rice and Beans” program feeds up to 129 students daily at Casa Para Niños del Pacifico, totaling approximately 30,000 meals a year.
Volunteers are the backbone of Sailfest, making the annual event a success. Now is the time to sign up for one of the many volunteer roles that help bring everything together and support the underprivileged children of Zihuatanejo towards a brighter future.
