Ground swells destroy five restaurants on Acapulco beach.

The swell phenomenon caused a complete collapse of sales over the past four weeks at Alfredo Bonfil Beach. The strong waves ultimately collapsed the fronts of five establishments, whose structures were undermined by the waves, and the beach ceased to exist for more than 300 meters, giving way to the sea.

However, service providers warned that in other years the swell has been intense, with the difference that “before, social media didn’t exist, now tourists don’t want to come, it gives us a bad reputation.”

Concepción Ortiz, representative of La Morena restaurant, said, “We’ve already built this restaurant three times; this has happened to us before. We have to act stupidly, we know what can happen.”

She admitted that while the tide has risen unlike other years, the force of the sea has already manifested itself before.

Concepción Ortiz recalled that in 1992, “the sea reached the street, the water entered the restaurants.” On this occasion, the stretch of sand on Bonfil Beach practically disappeared the week before, and the force of the waves swept away the huts of about twenty establishments, and in one case, devastated a pool.

She added that “there’s no tourism at all. With the news of the waves, people don’t want to come anymore, there are no customers. What am I doing here? The good thing is that I also sell Herbalife.”

He warned that the destruction of the foundations of numerous restaurants was caused by the amount of water and the force with which Hurricane John hit Acapulco from September 23 to 27, although it originated when Hurricane John devastated Acapulco on October 25, 2023.

He mentioned that “Hurricane John smashed the rocks from one side to the other. There was a rock that had been on the beach for years and appeared about 20 meters away. The sea was very strong, and the pounding of the rocks affected the foundations of the restaurants.”

Concepción added that “many of us put rocks on the beach in front of the restaurants because after Otis, there were some large holes in the sand. But the force of John caused the rocks to pound the foundations, which is why the structures are now weak. The strong sea comes and undermines them.”
