The General Coordination of Social Communication and Spokesperson for the Federal Government reported that it has suspended the official who slapped a journalist during an event for President Claudia Sheinbaum, held in Guerrero.
In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic stated that, following what happened during the event held in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, it contacted the assaulted reporter, Sergio Ocampo, to review the case.
The media outlet Bajo Palabra identified the assaulted journalist as Sergio Ocampo, director of Radio Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero (UAGro) and contributor to La Jornada, while the attacking official was identified as Ruslán Aranda Hernández, a member of the Presidency’s Social Communication team.
In the document from the General Coordination of Social Communication, the Sheinbaum administration apologized to the journalist.
“The person involved in these events has been suspended while the investigation into what happened is completed, and the necessary measures will be taken accordingly.”
A video documenting the moment of the attack was shared on social media, in which the attacker can also be seen throwing a chair at the journalist.
Finally, the Government Spokesperson’s Office stated in its statement that it respects members of the media and pledged to guarantee the free exercise of journalistic work at all times.
