Turtle deaths and egg thefts reported in Guerrero

Marine wildlife in Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, is facing a survival crisis after the discovery of two dead turtles in Los Mogotes. The group in charge of the Las Playas Turtle Camp reported that the turtles died from dog attacks, while several nests suffered egg theft by local residents. Despite the hostile environment, volunteers managed to rescue six nests during their midnight patrols.

Given the seriousness of the events documented on social media, environmentalists demanded a response from Mexican authorities to safeguard the turtles that come to the Guerrero coast and prevent them from dying after encountering predators.

The group emphasized that the presence of dogs on the coast is due to irresponsible owners who allow them to roam freely without supervision, and that the instincts of these domestic animals are wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. They urged coastal residents to keep their pets under control.

The residents demanded increased surveillance to stop the illegal sale of turtle eggs; this action is crucial to curbing what they describe as a policy of neglect that threatens regional biodiversity.
