Residents of at least ten neighborhoods in Zihuatanejo faced renewed power outages Thursday night and early Friday morning, caused by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The situation sparked discontent among users who were left without electricity for extended periods in their homes and businesses.
Citizen reports indicated outages in the city center, as well as in the neighborhoods of La Noria, Emiliano Zapata, Vicente Guerrero, Cuauhtémoc, Primer Paso Cardenista, Libertad, Las Mesas, and other areas of the municipality. Service was gradually restored in several sectors, while in others the outages lasted for several hours.
Rain and high demand are among the possible causes.
To date, the Federal Electricity Commission has not issued an official explanation for the cause of these outages. However, the power outages coincide with the 2026 rainy and tropical cyclone season, a period when lightning strikes, strong winds, falling branches on power lines, and soil saturation can affect the electrical infrastructure.
This is compounded by the increased energy consumption resulting from the high temperatures associated with the midsummer heat wave, when thousands of households run fans, air conditioners, and other electrical appliances for much of the day and night, increasing the demand on the distribution network.
Users demand greater service stability
Residents stated that the power outages have become increasingly frequent in recent weeks and pointed out that, in addition to the inconvenience, they disrupt domestic, commercial, and work activities. They also expressed concern about potential damage to appliances and electronic equipment caused by voltage fluctuations when power is restored.
Users called on the Federal Electricity Commission to promptly report the causes of power outages and, if necessary, to reinforce preventive maintenance actions on the municipality’s electrical infrastructure, with the aim of reducing failures and providing a more stable service during the current rainy and hot season.
