The scarcity of sailfish has caused a new price increase in Zihuatanejo, where vendors reported that fresh fillets are now selling for up to 350 pesos per kilogram, while frozen product reaches 250 pesos. This situation is attributed to the low catch of the species and the increase in acquisition costs.
Vendors explained that fishermen are currently returning with small catches, which has considerably reduced the supply. They noted that when they manage to catch one, they must buy it whole or “by the ball” at a price ranging between 140 and 150 pesos per kilogram, a cost that does not include expenses for ice, preservation, transportation, and handling before it can be sold to the public.
Low Catch Keeps Prices High
According to vendors, the decrease in fishing activity is mainly due to sea conditions during the rainy season, which makes it difficult for boats to go out to fish regularly and reduces the amount of product available in the markets.
They indicated that the increase is not due to a decision to boost profits, but rather to the need to recoup their investment and cover daily operating costs. “There’s no fish; we barely make enough to pay for ice and other expenses,” commented one of the vendors interviewed.
Consumers Feel the Increase
The price hike has begun to impact the budgets of families and those who regularly prepare traditional dishes like sailfish strips, one of Zihuatanejo’s most iconic foods. Some consumers have opted to reduce their purchases or substitute this species with other, less expensive alternatives.
Vendors are hopeful that the price will decrease once fishing conditions improve and the sailfish catch increases again. Meanwhile, they believe that the supply will remain limited and that prices will remain high for the next few weeks.
