The bodies of five men were found on Tuesday, December 28, lying on the side of the road near the city of Iguala, in the state of Guerrero, on the Mexican Pacific coast.

The state prosecutor’s office noted that the five men had stab wounds to the face and neck, which is assumed that their throats had been cut.

The bodies were also located in an area where there are territorial disputes between drug trafficking groups. In the area, there are also activities carried out by the self-defense groups, which are sometimes linked to organized crime.

In addition, on Tuesday, authorities reported that the skeletal remains found in November in the state of Sonora, bordering the United States, belong to 25 different people.

Volunteer searchers found 14 mass graves in a thicket that contained bones, some of them charred, and decomposing bodies. The remains were so scrambled that it took investigators more than a month to determine the number of bodies.

Voluntary search groups, made up of relatives of missing persons, found the mass graves near a highway west of Hermosillo, the capital of the state of Sonora.

Sonora has been the scene of disputes over drug trafficking routes between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, allied with the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel, and a group allied with drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero.
