Los Tlacos and La Familia Michoacana agree to a truce in Guerrero, says priest
This week, both armed groups were involved in a confrontation that reportedly left at least 12 people dead in the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan.
Chilpancingo, Guerrero.- The criminal organizations Familia Michoacana and Los Tlacos agreed to a truce, after the massacre in the Las Tunas community in the mountains of the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan, in the Tierra Caliente region of Guerrero.
The director of the Center for the Defense of the Rights of Victims of Violence, Minerva Bello, and the priest José Filiberto Velázquez Florencio, reported on Wednesday that brothers Johnny and Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga, alleged leaders of the Familia Michoacana, spoke by phone with the leader of Los Tlacos, Onesimo Marquina Chapa and agreed to a ceasefire.
The priest explained that the truce would take place in all the territories where the two organizations had a dispute.
Velazquez Florencio said that he does not know what the truce consisted of, “only that there will be a ceasefire.”
He said that neither did the bishops of Guerrero participate in this truce, who according to the bishop of the Chilpancingo-Chilapa diocese, José de Jesús González Hernández, at the beginning of this year spoke with the leaders of the Familia Michoacana and Los Tlacos so that they agreed a truce but they refused.
The refusal, according to the bishop, was because they did not want to give up the Las Tunas community.
The priest stated that on this occasion it was not necessary to exchange telephone numbers because the leaders of both criminal organizations have maintained dialogue for “months.”
According to the authorities, the Familia Michoacana and Los Tlacos maintain a bloody dispute in the part of the Sierra that covers the municipalities of Heliodoro Castillo (Tlacotepec) and San Miguel Totolapan.
In 2024, two massacres were recorded in these municipalities. The first in the community of Buenavista de Hurtado, in Tlacotepec. There, according to the residents, members of the Familia Michoacana attacked the community even with drones. The result was 10 dead men who were later burned.
The other massacre occurred this Monday, in the town of Las Tunas, in San Miguel Totolapan. There, in an alleged confrontation, 16 from the Familia Michoacana and one from Los Tlacos died.
In the mountain region, this dispute has caused dozens of forced displacements.
