Despite violence, farmers and ranchers make pilgrimage in Guerrero for good harvests

The violence that has occurred in recent days in this capital city did not deter farmers, ranchers, and charros (a type of farmer), who made a pilgrimage on foot and on horseback to thank the Virgin of the Assumption for the good rainy season that brought them bountiful harvests of corn, beans, squash, and other crops, as well as new calves for their ranches and pastures.

The six homicides committed between last Thursday and Saturday, and the two disappearances, did not stop dozens of people of all ages and families from making the walk to the Cathedral of Santa María de la Asunción at noon this Sunday, as they have done for a hundred years.

Carrying corn on the cob, they walked through the streets of Chilpancingo to the rhythm of wind bands and the traditional tlacololeros dance, until they arrived at the cathedral to place their offerings beside the main altar, where they thanked their patron saint for the “good rainy season.”

The festivities were preceded by a violent weekend: on Thursday, alleged criminals killed a young man in downtown Chilpancingo, as well as a member of the National Guard.

On Saturday morning, three men between the ages of 35 and 40 were murdered in Chilpancingo, whose bodies were found in the Huacapa River. Authorities also reported the execution of one person in the El Polvorín neighborhood, on the outskirts of the capital.

Also that day, two individuals were reported missing: a 17-year-old woman and a man in his 30s.

These events did not prevent the contingents of farmers, ranchers, and charros from gathering at noon yesterday in the Granados Maldonado avenue, and from there, accompanied by a wind band, dancing tlacololeros (a group of Mexican folk musicians), and Los Diablos (a group of Mexican folk musicians) from the Costa Chica region.

Mezcal native to that region was not lacking, until arriving at the cathedral, where a mass of thanksgiving was held for the abundant rains and the good harvests they brought.
