The president of the Zihuatanejo Hotels and Motels Association, Rogelio Lozano Calderón, described the results of the long weekend for Labor Day and the Battle of Puebla as “fantastic,” as most hotels in the destination reached 100% occupancy on Friday, May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd.

Yesterday, Monday, Lozano Calderón explained by phone that, while not all the hotels he represents reported full occupancy, “the overall average didn’t fall below 90 percent occupancy during those two days, representing a massive influx that kept the destination practically packed.”

However, the hotel representative noted that the surge was short-lived, as by Sunday the figure had dropped drastically below 20 percent. He added that on Monday of this week, occupancy closed at levels below 10 percent, thus marking the end of the tourist period for this long weekend.

Despite the high occupancy rates, Rogelio Lozano lamented the conditions under which tourists had to travel, as the highways were congested and the flow of traffic at toll booths was extremely slow and difficult for visitors. He was referring to the Siglo XXI Morelia-Lázaro Cárdenas highway, the main route used by tourists arriving from Michoacán, Guanajuato, Querétaro, and Mexico City.

The hotelier mentioned that the sector maintains high expectations for the remaining long weekends in May, confident that the port of Zihuatanejo will continue to be a top choice for tourists.
