The swell phenomenon affected nearly ten beachside restaurants and bars belonging to service providers on Boca Chica beach in Tecpan de Galeana, on the Costa Grande.

The damage to the restaurants and bars caused by the strong waves in recent days resulted in household items, appliances, chairs, tables, and other kitchen utensils being swept away by the current.

In an interview with MILENIO, María Eugenia Cayetaño, owner of the “El Trozo” restaurant and bar, explained how the strong waves caused the total loss of her livelihood as a service provider:

“Everything was gone, my entire kitchen, and it almost swept me away, it almost dragged me down the steps, and in fact, everything was gone.”

She recounted that, despite all the damage, she, as a service provider, “has to keep going.”

The service provider asked the state and federal governments for help with social programs to continue the tourism and economic activity that is so important, especially during the upcoming holiday season:

“We’re not asking for large sums, but we do want them to give us some financial support that will actually help us, because several beaches are affected, and we’re not asking the government for huge amounts; we’d appreciate any help they can give us.”

She added that they need to revitalize their businesses for the upcoming holiday season to welcome tourists to Boca Chica beach:

“This past holiday season was very slow, and right now, with the usual clientele, we’re still down, and we have to figure out how to adapt to continue providing service.”
