COYUCA DE CATALÁN, GUERRERO — Terrorized families trapped inside a local medical clinic in the municipality of Coyuca de Catalán are making an desperate plea for an emergency air rescue. The urgent call for evacuation follows a relentless onslaught of heavy gunfire and targeted explosive drone attacks by heavily armed criminal groups.
The remote mountainous region of Guerrero has become a fierce battleground for territorial control between warring drug cartels. The conflict has essentially left ordinary citizens trapped in the crossfire. Dozens of locals, including young children and vulnerable patients, sought refuge inside the community clinic after the violence rapidly escalated around their homes.
According to reports from Reforma, the trapped civilians face an increasingly perilous situation as armed groups surround the perimeter. Witnesses hiding inside the facility have described a state of psychological warfare, reporting the terrifying buzz of low-flying drones dropping explosive devices directly onto neighboring structures and near the medical facility itself. Coupled with constant volleys of high-caliber rifle fire, the tactical blockade has completely cut off all terrestrial exit routes.
With local roads blocked and compromised by cartel checkpoints, terrified family members have taken to social media and digital channels to contact human rights groups and journalists. They argue that a land-based evacuation by state police is currently too dangerous, making an immediate military air rescue the only viable option to save their lives.
Local human rights defenders are backing the families’ pleas, pressuring the federal government to deploy the Mexican Army (Sedena) and specialized air units to secure the perimeter and evacuate the civilians. As night falls on the region, families remain barricaded inside the clinic, running out of basic supplies and praying for a swift intervention before the armed groups breach the facility.
