ACAPULCO, Guerrero — Air passenger traffic to Guerrero’s primary coastal destinations rose by eight percent during the first half of 2026, marking a significant recovery and expansion in regional tourism, state officials reported.
According to Guerrero Tourism Secretary Simón Quiñones Orozco, the international airports in Acapulco and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo collectively welcomed approximately 60,000 additional passengers between January and June compared to the same period in 2025.
State tourism authorities attributed the sustained growth to an aggressive air connectivity strategy executed over the past year. During this timeframe, officials successfully established eight new flight routes—five serving Acapulco and three serving Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. Recent additions include direct domestic connections operated by Volaris from key regional hubs, including Querétaro, Puebla, and the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) near Mexico City.
Quiñones Orozco highlighted that the region has consistently averaged around 10,000 additional air arrivals per month throughout 2026. Looking ahead to the upcoming winter travel season, tourism authorities are negotiating further route expansions, including efforts to restore direct flights from Canada via Sunwing Airlines.
In addition to expanding flight schedules, the Guerrero Ministry of Tourism is preparing a comprehensive maritime connectivity plan to diversify transit channels and strengthen overall accessibility across state destinations.
Local officials emphasize that building robust commercial transport networks is essential for establishing Guerrero’s beach resorts as competitive, easily accessible destinations for both domestic and international travelers. As summer holiday travel peaks across the state, tourism stakeholders expect high hotel occupancy rates, fueled in large part by the steady influx of air passengers into the region.
