Members of the Correa Water Community expressed interest in resuming the “La Chanequera” ecotourism project, located in the Playa Larga mangrove area, with the goal of preserving this ecosystem and utilizing it sustainably, reported Bernardo Solís Radilla, former president of the community commissariat and promoter of the initiative.

The project contemplates the conservation of approximately 26 hectares of mangroves, 5 hectares of water surface, and an extensive wetland area, located near downtown Zihuatanejo and the tourist development of Playa Larga. The proposal includes silent tours in oar-powered trajineras (trajineras), so as not to disturb the wildlife that inhabits the area.

Solís Radilla recalled that in previous years this area was at risk after the illegal logging of more than one hectare of mangroves. This intervention was halted thanks to a citizen complaint and the response of Profepa (Profepa), which even led to arrests. Therefore, he emphasized the urgency of reactivating the ecological project, despite the financial constraints.

Although the development of La Chanequera is estimated to require a multimillion-dollar investment, the ejidatarios agree that it is worthwhile given the natural value and tourism potential of the site, home to birds such as flamingos, roseate spoonbills, pelicans, herons, and storks, especially during the winter.
